Rigor. (from the lat. rigore) n. 1. harshness; strength; 2.fig., severity; punctuality; accuracy.

There is no "more or less levelled", "more or less upright”, "more or less clean" or "more or less safe", but rather “levelled”, "upright”, "clean” and “safe". The rigour is reflected in our procedures, in time and in the rules to follow. In the light of moral and principles, being severe means being rigorous.

Passion. (from the lat. passione) n. 1. intense and usually violent feeling (affection, joy, hate, etc.) which hinders the exercise of impartial logic; 2. derived from a feeling; 3. great predilection; 4. partiality; 5. great grief; immense suffering...

Under the sign of passion – a text of the Portuguese poet Regina Guimarães – is our icon. Passion is to reveal great enthusiasm for something, favourable encouragement or opposite to something.
It is the sensibility transmitted by an architect or engineer through work.
Passion is the dedication to a project. Passion is a state of warm soul.

Solidarity. (from the lat. solidare) n. 1. the quality of being solidary; 2. reciprocal responsibility among the members of a group, namely social, professional, etc.; 3. sense of sharing another’s suffering.

Being solidary is being a friend, offering our hand with genuine generosity and bringing joy and human warmth to those who, somehow, are marginalized. Being solidary is being more human. A solidary company is recognized as a fair and non-selfish company. A solidary company is a preferred choice in business. It is a more competitive company. Volunteering is a vehicle to solidarity. It is modern, fair, cultured, friend, it is a noble gesture of moral elevation.

Courage. (from the lat. coraticum) n. 1. bravery facing danger; intrepidity; to have audacity; 2. moral force before a suffering or setback; 3. [fig.] to input energy when performing a difficult task; perseverance...

It is a value that we must highlight as opposed to the fearful, cowardly and laziness.
The courage to react to criticism not with an attitude of demotivation or sadness, but rather to search for the means and the action to overcome its own reason. This kind of courage, which is also an intellectual courage, is highly recommended.

Responsibility. (from the lat respondere) n. the trait of being answerable to someone for something or being responsible for one's conduct; a form of trustworthiness.

We must be certain that, before a choice, we chose what is best for both of us and not just the best for each one. Each employee is responsible for his negotiated activity and co-responsible if the co-worker does not fulfil his own task, thus preventing the common goal. A team is a set of individuals - is a whole. In the business game, as in social or family contexts, everyone must comply with their own relative position and we shall not permit that one of ours fails to be in our team.

Art and traditional commerce come together to celebrate 25 years of literary prize

Público

In Braga, there are 25 artworks on display in 25 commercial establishments. The script “Art, Literature and Local Commerce” honours each of the books awarded by the dst Literature Grand Prize, founded in 1995.

As soon as you enter the Centésima Página bookstore, there is a painting that observes us, among the dozens of volumes that rest on the shelves. On the canvas, letters are displayed in a grid, covered by red and grey spots. At the bottom, there is a sentence framed by a tile: "I knew the words had been abandoned, as if they were in your veins." The author of the painting, Manuela Pimentel, removed these words from the poetry work included in the dst Literature Grand Prize this year: Junto à Pedra, by Fernando Guimarães. “In this piece, there are red rips. It is as if we saw the blood running in the veins under the microscope. And there are letters out of place, as if they were abandoned ”, she describes.

This is one of the 25 artworks visible in 25 stores in the urban fabric of Braga, to mark each of the books that won the literary prize founded by the business group mainly linked to civil construction, in 1995. Like the rest of the script's creations, Silêncio, by Manuela Pimentel, is a painting on display from Monday to November 9th. Accustomed to taking inspiration from words, the artist took street posters and covered them with acrylic, varnish and cement to evoke the poetry of the writer from Porto, who receives the prize on the 4th. “All the poems in the book have silence in common. I found this very beautiful in the work of Fernando Guimarães, who I didn't know. I reflected on this question of thinking becoming silent ”, she describes.

For one of the owners of the bookstore that houses the painting, located on Avenida Central, the itinerary is “interesting”, both because of the “immense quality” of the exhibits and the promotion of the city's traditional commerce - art is in bookstores, cafes and pastry shops, but also in hairdressing salons, an optician, a dry cleaning and a florist. “This brings art to people and surprises them. Whoever enters one of the establishments suddenly sees an artwork in an unexpected place”, emphasizes Helena Veloso.

The idea of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the literature prize with 25 artworks has “more than a year”, but the Salão Nobre of Theatro Circo was the space initially intended for the exhibition, reveals Helena Mendes Pereira, general manager and curator of zet gallery, the entity in charge of the script. It was the pandemic of covid-19 that motivated the use of establishments as exhibition spaces. “We didn't know if we would have events at Theatro Circo and we started thinking about alternative formats. We thought that this script could reinforce local commerce and democratize access to art, showing that the works can be in several places”, she says, praising the “easy” accession of traders.

For Helena Veloso, this artistic project helps the various establishments in the city to react to the loss of customers, due to the pandemic, but above all to work together. “The pandemic has created a favourable environment for joint projects to make more sense”, she stresses.

Art beyond the winners

Strengthening the link between local commerce and art is one of the objectives of the initiative but reinforcing the memory of the dst Literature Grand Prize is also, recognizes Helena Mendes Pereira. "Many people are unaware that dst has been associated with a literary award for 25 years," she says. Thanks to the impulse of the essayists Vítor Aguiar e Silva, the most recent winner of the Camões Prize, and Carlos Mendes de Sousa, and the writer José Manuel Mendes, winner of the first edition, in 1995, with "Presságios do Sul", the award was awarded to several writers Portuguese, alternating the choice of a prose book in one year, with a poetry book in the next. Maria Ondina Braga, Nuno Júdice, Maria Velho da Costa, Manuel Alegre, Daniel Jonas and Lídia Jorge are some of the award-winning authors.

All of these authors deserved the attention of visual artists. One of them, however, did not have to evoke any specific work. As the prize was not awarded in 2009 and 2011, there are so far 24 books awarded. It was up to the sculptor Pedro Figueiredo to make the 25th work of the script, the only three-dimensional one. To honour poetry, the artist was inspired by Calliope, the muse of epic poetry in Greek mythology. On the ceiling of Café Vianna, an establishment that has been operating in the Arcada since 1871, there is a female figure with a book in her hand, in a slightly downward trajectory. “She descends from heaven as a messenger of the mysteries of poetry, almost as if offering the book to Braga”, says Pedro Figueiredo. Held between April and May, during the state of emergency, the sculpture is also a representation of the “life suspended, with an uncertain future” that guides these days, confesses the artist.

Largo S. João do Souto, in the historic centre of Braga, will permanently host an artistic installation in tiles relating to the 25 years of the literary initiative, authored by JAS (artistic name of João Alexandrino). The work will be inaugurated on November 4th, the day when Fernando Guimarães receives the award.
